Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) is a Japanese joint-stock company (kabushiki kaisha) with its head office in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. It is wholly owned by Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. The current legal entity was set up in 1996 as Wakashio Bank and took the SMBC name in March 2003, when it merged with the former SMBC, which Sakura Bank and Sumitomo Bank had formed in April 2001.
